Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
These filler agents consist of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring sugar.  It is found in the human body in the skin, cartilage, joints and eyes.  The role of hyaluronic acid in skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent.  These hyaluronic fillers can be used in a number of areas including lips, chin, under eyes, temples/brow, nasalabial folds and cheeks.  Depending on the areas treated, these products can last for 3 to 9 months.

Restylane is currently the most commonly used hyaluronic acid filler; however, Juvederm is a newer HA filler that may be as popular in the future. Hylaform is used when there is a need to minimize side effects of redness and swelling after injection.  With all these HA fillers you will notice an immediate difference in the areas treated.  Redness and swelling of the areas may persist up to 72 hours.  Bruising of the injection sites can last for up to 7 days and is more common in more thin skinned areas such as below the eyes and in the lips.
