What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
PDT is performed using a topical solution of Levulan (Aminolevulinic Acid), that when applied to the skin, targets faster growing skin cells, such as precancerous or sun-damaged spots, broken capillaries, acne lesions and oil glands. The PDT solution is then activated by a light source such as a laser or IPL. The areas that have absorbed the PDT solution become more sensitive to the light of the laser allowing the light to be more easily absorbed.
Depending on the goal of treatment and each patient's individual cosmetic concerns, a different laser may be recommended in combination with PDT. Other lasers utilized for treatment include GentleLase and VBeam.

What can I expect the day of treatment?
Upon arrival, a nurse will apply the Levulan to the area of treatment. The Levulan will need to stay on the skin for 45-90 minutes before activation by a laser. (For this reason, we tell everyone to bring something to read or work on during this time.) Protective goggles will be worn during the treatment. You may experience stinging, tingling, prickling or burning during the treatment. This sensation will gradually resolve after the treatment is complete.

What can I expect after my treatment?
In the days following treatment, the skin will be red and swollen and the dark spots treated will become slightly darker then fade over 5-7 days. Occasionally there is mild to moderate crusting especially in areas with significant sun-damage. Rarely patients experience significant redness and burning like a sunburn - this is usually in the first 24 hours. Patients are advised to avoid any sunlight or bright light exposure for 48 hours due to the possibility of burning. The skin should be kept moisturized with Vaseline, Aquaphor or another moisturizer recommended by the doctor. Avoid Retin-A, Tazorac, Avage or Renova for several days after your treatment. Make-up can be applied immediately after treatment.
Depending on the results you are trying to achieve, multiple sessions may be necessary. Individual results will vary depending on the patient and the severity of the skin condition being treated.
